Estonian University of Life Sciences is part of European research project “Towards Sustainable Land-Use in the Context of Climate Change and Biodiversity in Europe (in short: Europe-LAND)” launched in June 2023. The project aims to develop, test and implement integrated tools that can improve our understanding of the factors behind land use decisions in Europe. In addition, Europe-LAND aims to explore the awareness and engagement of agricultural and land-use stakeholders in relation to the challenges of climate change and biodiversity. Project objectives also include expanding the knowledge base on how land use decisions can be influenced to efficiently and socially responsibly support policy goals such as mitigation and adaptation to climate change and biodiversity conservation. 

Methods used within the project include national-level analysis (e.g. harmonization of fragmented land use data) and land use surveys, participatory approaches to engage different land use stakeholders and authorities, complemented by eight local case studies for demonstration, and a comprehensive range of webinars and events to build stakeholders' skills and competences in dealing with climate change.

A total of 13 scientific European partners from twelve countries are involved:  Germany, Greece, Estonia, Denmark, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Poland, Latvia, Slovakia, Austria, Czech Republic. Furthermore, two associated partners (Finland and Lithuania) are involved in Europe-LAND. The project is coordinated by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
